Art 71      Assignment 1: Explore and critique virtual community: people and spaces

In Onlive Traveler and it’s community:

 

1)      Observe People (avatars)

a.       Who are they (names – don’t ask them, point at them with mouse)?

b.      What kind of conversations are they having?

c.       Are they using body language, social persuasion, group dynamics, use of space?

2)      Meet and talk with people.

a.        Document who you met and your general impressions:

                                                                           i.      Names of people you met ( handle).

                                                                         ii.      Where do you think their from based on their voice and profile?

                                                                        iii.      Does there online persona differ from the above observation (ii)?

b.      Interview them ( example questions – don’t intimidate but get to know).

                                                                           i.      Do people role play on onlive?

                                                                         ii.      How are you different in world and out?

                                                                        iii.      What kinds of things happen in onlive?

                                                                       iv.      Show me your favorite spaces.

3)      Critique Spaces for Mood and Atmosphere

a.       Go to 3 spaces (some with people in them)

                                                                           i.      Does it convey a mood, what kind (name the spaces and the atmosphere associated with each)

                                                                         ii.      Does it hinder or help the social process.

 

Hand in a (at most) 2 page chronicle of the above issues. Use the numbered headers from above, as so:

1)      Observe People

2)      Meet and talk with people.

3)      Critique Spaces for Mood and Atmosphere

 

but feel free to use the sub issues as a guide to your chronicle. If in doubt, follow the subtopics.

 

Use MS Word or a Web Authoring Tool to do your 2 page chronicle. Save as a web page (html). Hyperlink space names or any other relevant material. Use email to hand in assignment with you html as an enclosure.

 

Name your html assignment: < first initial, last name, 1.html>  - so if you are John Smith, name it jsmith.html, which is attached to an email and to me at sdipaola@stanford.edu. These are due 6pm Thurs Oct 5th. Before next class.

 

NOTE: You can work in teams for this first assignment. Clearly state who is in the team at the top of the html assignment and call your assignment team<name>.html, where name is of one of the students on the teams, so teamjsmith.html. All names of the team should be in the html page, and in the email. No large than 5 people on a team.
